Changes to the 990 extension filing

Effective with the 2016 990 annual returns, the IRS has changed the length of time on extensions to file. A nonprofit organizations 990 annual return is due on the 15th day of the 5th month after the close of their year. For a 12/31 year end this is May 15th, for a 6/30 year end this is November 15th. That extension was good for only 3 months, at which time you could file an additional 3 month extension if needed. Now, the first extension is automatically for 6 months and is the only extension you need to file. Final due date of the return is still 11 months and 15 days after the close of the year. For a 12/31 year end this is November 15th, and for a 6/30 it is May 15th.

If you haven't filed your 6/30/16 returns yet, make sure to do so by May 15th!
